INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Jim Caldwell’s tenure with the Indianapolis Colts has come to an end. Following a dismal 2-14 season and several days of uncertainty about his job status, the Colts announced the firing of their third-year head coach Tuesday.
The announcement was made via a one-sentence blog post on Colts.com.
" The Indianapolis Colts have released Jim Caldwell of his duties as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts."
More information about the team's future is expected from a 4 p.m. news conference.
When Jim Irsay hired Ryan Grigson on Jan. 11, the Colts owner said his new general manager would be responsible for evaluating everyone on the current staff. After six days Grigson decided to go in a new direction with the head coach position.
Caldwell had been a part of the Colts organization since 2002. After becoming head coach in January 2009 following the retirement of Tony Dungy, he promptly led the Colts to the brink of another Super Bowl title. Caldwell’s 14-2 record that year was a new NFL record for the best start by a rookie head coach. Caldwell’s overall record as Colts head coach is 26-22.
Irsay says their search for Caldwell’s replacement will begin immediately.
