Dungy as Colts GM? Ex-coach weighs in

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Since the firing of Bill and Chris Polian on Monday by Colts owner Jim Irsay, there has been a lot of speculation on who will take over at the top of the Colts organization.

One name mentioned especially among Colts fans is former Super Bowl winning coach Tony Dungy. Dungy weighed in on the prospect when he spoke Wednesday afternoon with WISH-TV Sports Director Anthony Calhoun.

Dungy said he has not been contacted about the general manager position. He said he is only interested in being a “parent” and “analyst” at this time in his life. He is an NFL analyst for NBC, and his son, Eric, plays football for the University of Oregon, which won the Rose Bowl on Monday.

As for his thoughts on Colts head coach Jim Caldwell returning next season? He said his “gut feeling” is he thinks Caldwell will be back.

“You have a coach that took a team to the Super Bowl his first year, playoffs his second year. Why would you make a change after one bad year?” Dungy said.

During a news conference Monday announcing the Polians' dismissal, Irsay said Caldwell was staying in place for now , and that the new GM would likely be involved in any decision regarding the coach's future with the team.

Last year Dungy was inducted into the Colts’ Ring of Honor, and he led Indianapolis to its only Super Bowl win to cap off the 2006 season.
