INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indianapolis Colts officials have used a franchise tag on punter Pat McAfee to keep him with the team for at least one more year.
If McAfee and the Colts can't reach an agreement on a long-term contact, he will make $2.98 million this year.
“It's an honor to know that I'll be a member of the Indianapolis Colts for at least another year,” McAfee said in a news release. “I love the city, I love the team, and I love being a member of the community. I obviously hope to work out a long-term deal to stay here forever, but one more guaranteed year is awesome. Go Colts.”
The former West Virginia Mountaineer was selected by the Colts in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft (222nd overall).
McAfee finished the 2011 season with a 46.6 gross punting average, which set a new franchise record. He posted the second-best total for net punting average in franchise history with a 39.2 mark in 2011.
In 2012, the 25-year-old averaged 48.2 yards per punt.
