INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The battle for Indianapolis’ West Side bragging rights takes place at Pike High School this Friday when they host Ben Davis. In recent history these two teams didn’t play in the regular season and had to rely on a possible meeting in the sectionals to square off. That ended last season when they met in week two. In the 2010 sectional Pike won an overtime thriller 45-38. Last season Ben Davis got their revenge with a 28-22 win at home.
Ben Davis knocked off 4A power house Cathedral 24-21 in week one and are ranked No. 3 in both 5A polls this week. QB Kyle Castner had a very impressive outing, completing 18 of 22 passes for 152 yards, 1 TD and no interceptions. Malcolm Fogle led the way on the ground and in the air rushing 14 times for 51 yards and grabbing 10 receptions for 66 yards. Their defense also racked up four sacks. While the Giants are the probable favorite in this match-up, they do have to go on the road up to 71st Street and as we have seen anything can happen in this one.
Pike took care of North Central last week 23-6 and is 10th in the 5A Coaches Poll. QB Brent Lyles completed 19 of 32 passes for 198 yards and RB Derrick Wilkerson carried the ball 19 times for 124 yards. Dominique Booth caught 11 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns, a very nice night for him. North Central’s lone score came off of a 95 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Often in big rivalry games between two good teams, Special Teams and turnovers can be the difference. The Red Devils can’t afford any mistakes against Ben Davis this week.
