INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indianapolis’ East side is where the Columbus North Bulldogs will travel this week to take on 5A powerhouse Lawrence Central. At first glance this one may look like it could be a runaway for the Bears, but don’t be so sure. This game could be a lot closer than many people may think.
Columbus North is only 1-3 so far in 2012. But let’s take a look at their three losses. First, they lost 27-7 at Carmel. The Bulldogs were only trailing 7-0 at the half in this one, so it was a little closer than the score suggests. Also, how many teams are even in the game when they travel to play the number one ranked team in 5A on their home field? Then, 23-20 against long time rival and co-Columbus residents Columbus East. You never want to lose to your biggest rival, but a 3 point loss to the number one ranked team in 4A isn’t something to be terribly ashamed of. The one that is most worrisome is the third, 42-35 at home against Franklin Central. Franklin Central is by no means a pushover; in fact they are 3-1 with their only loss coming to a very good Roncalli squad. You’ve got to protect your home field if you are going to be a contender though. That all being said, Columbus North is right on the cusp of competing at a high level with some of the best programs in the area. At Lawrence Central is going to be very tough, but if you can play with the likes of Carmel and Columbus East, you should be able to contend with any team in the state.
Lawrence Central has been destroying its competition so far this season. The Bears are 4-0, are ranked third in the 5A Coaches’ poll, and have won their games by a combined score of 184-32. Before giving up 23 points in a win versus Pike last week, their combined season total was 150-9. They are the clear favorite to win Conference Indiana this season, and their sights are set on returning to the 5A State Title game. They can not overlook the Bulldogs though. This could be a very entertaining game to watch.
