Lawrence Central wins first state title in 5A game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Isaiah Townsend ran 193 yards and two touchdowns to help the Lawrence Central Bears beat the Ft. Wayne Snider Panthers, 39-14, for the Class 5A state title Saturday night.

Drake Christen threw for 228 yards and a touchdown and ran for 92 yards and a score for the Bears (15-0), who won their first state title.

Brandon Phelps threw for 194 yards and a touchdown for Ft. Wayne Snider (14-1), who made their first state finals appearance since 2004.

The Bears led 14-7 at halftime and scored twice in the third quarter, including a 64-yard touchdown run by Townsend to go up 26-7.

Townsend scored again on a 20-yard run in the fourth to make it 32-14 to put the game out of reach.
