Twins to compete at state championship

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - High school seniors and identical twins Devin and Dominic Dixon share a love of basketball. Both are headed to semi-state this weekend, but they’ll play for two different high schools:  Devin for Cathedral and Dominic for University. 

Both say they chose their respective high schools, because they each liked different things the schools had to offer.

“I’ve always liked University,” said Dominic. “My sister went here. I saw all the different things they had to offer, especially how close the student-teacher relationships were.” 

Being at separate schools also helped each mold an identity away from the other.

“I’ve been able to separate myself,” said Devin. “Now it’s not the Dixon twins. It’s just Devin, like oh we’re going to watch Devin play at Cathedral or Dominic at University.”

While they’re apart during the school day, they never miss an opportunity to play one-on-one at home.

“If I see Dominic out there, I’m like ‘I’m going to get more shots up than he is,’” added Devin. “It fuels my competitiveness.”

Basketball season keeps their parents, Patricia and Randy, on their toes. Whenever the boys’ games conflict, the two go their separate ways to make sure there’s one parent at each boys’ game.

“I don’t find it that difficult,” said mom, Patricia. “It’s just the way our lives are, so I just consider it a blessing and figure out how to handle one game to the next.”

Dad Randy had a different take.

“Well, I’m going to tell you the truth,” he said. “With all the AAU games, you don’t have weekends anymore.  You’re somewhere in a gym watching them play, which we’re proud to do, but you sit in there, three games in one day and it’s tough.”

Luckily, the Dixons won’t have far to travel this weekend. Oddly enough, both boys will play in the same location, Seymour, for a shot to head to the state championship.
