SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) - Hot temperatures didn't deter race fans from participating in Carb Day on Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Some race fans did end up at the infield hospital because of the heat. But by early afternoon, the head doctor at the track said the number of patients treated was average for Carb Day.
Many race fans took time out to cool down. Some sought out the dozens of cool zones around the track.
On the plaza, shaded areas turned out to be prime real estate. Whether they sat in the shade or stood in the sun, most fans had a cooler at their side. We asked a few to show us what they packed.
"We got some water, beer, a little soda," said Daryl Thompson, Indianapolis. He said he was alternating his beverages from beer to water to beer to water.
One woman did share her concerns about trying to staying hydrated. She said she couldn't get a cup of ice without having to buy a drink to go with it.
Another fan concern had to do with the size of their coolers. Gate attendants wouldn't allow fans to bring in the larger coolers.
"It's 14 by 14 by 14. We are just trying to make sure people are used to it [Friday] so when they come back on Sunday they don't have an issue," said IMS spokesperson Doug Boles.
