INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - 50 years ago this May, Parnelli Jones took checkers at the INDY 500. He is the oldest living 500 champion and his face adorns the Borg-Warner trophy.
Every champion through 1998 received only a plaque. Now, winners get baby Borgs, a small version to take home.
Wednesday night in Detroit, Parnelli awarded Dario Franchitti his baby Borg for winning last May, and Borg-Warner surprised Jones with his own mini trophy, valued at over $25,000.
“Dario and Rick Mears were at my house and had some pictures,” said Jones. “I saw the baby Borg-Warner trophy they had received before, and I said, man, I've gotta have one of them, I'll buy it, whatever it takes. I've got to have one of them, so anyway they surprised me last night with one donated to me. I was thrilled to death, thrilled to death."
Jones also has a new book out called, “As a Matter of Fact, I am Parnelli Jones." It is a biography about his racing life.
