Code violations stack up for Super Bowl weekend

300 businesses warned

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Code Enforcement officers in Indianapolis had a busy weekend. Officers handed out more than 112 tickets to violators included bars, national chains and even street vendors who did not possess proper licenses during the Super Bowl festivities.

“Our inspectors have been out for three weeks, looking for special event violations,” said department spokesperson Kate Johnson.

The hefty fines ranged from $100 to $2,000. Code Enforcement officers also issued 310 warnings that did not include a fine.

“Some of the people who were fined were repeat offenders,” Johnson said.

In most cases, various vendors knew they were guilty of not having the proper paperwork. One man who tried to capitalize on the Super Bowl admitted to officers his lot was not licensed for commercial parking.

“I think it all was confusing and a little too much,” said Andrea Welsh, manager of Stadium Tavern near Lucas Oil Stadium.

Sunday, Welsh was cited by code officers. According to Welsh, the officers told her she did not have a valid permit to sell alcohol outside of the bar. However, she denies her servers sold any alcohol outside of the bar. She said people were buying alcohol from others areas and gathering outside her bar.

“We were not selling beer outside of our establishment,” Welsh said. “Everyone prepaid for everything they were drinking inside our building. ”

Welsh had a court date Monday. A judge decided to continue the case, so more of the facts of Welsh’s case could be sorted out.

“We are not aggressive," Johnson said. "Our intent is to enforce the laws in this county on a day-to-day basis.”
