INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - If you spent much time in Super Bowl Village, chances are good you saw the Super Scarves, one of the special touches devised by the Super Bowl Host Committee.
They were made by volunteers, for volunteers. But one of the people who crafted some of them isn't happy about where some of the scarves are showing up now.
Tanya Brooks has crocheted for years. But when she heard about some of the scarves showing up in online auctions – and going for hundreds of dollars – she was not happy, to put it mildly.
"I probably got redder than any apple you've ever,” she said. “For the first time in my life, I just - it really broke my heart."
Doing this with her friends was an expression of support for the Super Bowl Committee and for the city of Indianapolis.
"The crocheting part isn't difficult. It's finding the time that's difficult," she said.
The scarves could wind up in a closet, now that the game is over. Brooks doesn't want that.
“No. I'd like them to be worn and used - as the purpose was - to show our pride for our team and our city," she said.
But she also doesn't want people making a profit from work she and her friends donated. So she figures: if the scarves are to be sold, the money should go to charity.
"Pay it forward, so to speak. You know, we gave it to you,” she said. “You give it to somebody else."
