INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Ebonee Smith used to tease her husband about his phone alerting him to tweets by Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay in the middle of the night.
On Sunday afternoon, the teasing officially stopped, as Ebonee accompanied her husband, Jeffery Smith, to the Super Bowl after he won tickets through an Irsay contest on Twitter.
“He’s been following him so long,” Ebonee said, standing in Lucas Oil Stadium wearing a Peyton Manning jersey and a horseshoe painted on her cheek.
The couple has a young child, so Ebonee began hiding her husband’s phone so late-night tweets from Irsay wouldn’t wake the sleeping child.
On Saturday, when Jeffery saw the tweet from Irsay that he had solved one of his famed riddles, Jeffery said he couldn’t believe it.
“He said it all calm,” Ebonee recalled of Jeffery telling her he won. “And then he started jumping around like a little kid on Christmas.”
The couple paid gas money from Bloomington and $38.50 to park to attend their first ever Super Bowl.
Standing outside the stands inside the stadium, Jeffery was starting to believe that he was at the Super Bowl for the first time.
“Now it’s starting to feel real,” he said.
Although Jeffery typically cheers for the Atlanta Falcons, he was pulling for the New England Patriots Sunday. His wife, a faithful Colts fan, was cheering for the New York Giants led by her favorite quarterback’s little brother.
The riddle Jeffery solved was:
Riddle: "The zebra took a zanix downer and toppled over near a lions den. U no what happened then!"For 2 SupBowl tics, open division,GoodLuck— Jim Irsay (@JimIrsay) February 4, 2012
Jeffery’s answer was ZZ Top. His wife, laughing, said she still doesn’t understand the riddle or its answer.
