INDOT: Lane restrictions on I-69N

INDIANAPOLIS (INDOT) - Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors will restrict the right lane of northbound Interstate 69 tonight to update mile marker and exit signs approaching Exit 5 to 116th Street.

The right lane of northbound I-69 will be restricted beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday, August 8 until 5 a.m. Thursday, August 9 between 106th Street and Exit 5 to 116th Street. The exit ramp will remain open.

A subcontractor for Milestone Contractors will be replacing the signs within the current construction work zone near Exit 5. All other I-69 mile marker and exit signs are being replaced by INDOT crews. Alternating lane restrictions should be expected this week during nighttime hours on northbound I-69 between I-465 and Exit 3 to 96th Street as INDOT crews replace mile marker and exit signs in the area.

All I-69 mile marker signs in Indiana, from I-465 north to the Michigan state line, will be renumbered to reflect the I-69 expansion in southern Indiana. Exit signs and signs one mile before the exit ramp will display both the new designation and the previous exit number. New mile marker designations will simply add 200 to the familiar numbers. For example, Exit 0 will become Exit 200; Exit 10 becomes Exit 210, etc.

INDOT will maintain the dual exit signage for a minimum of three years, through October 2015. Thereafter, the previous exit numbers will no longer be replaced if damaged. These previous numbers will be removed by October 1, 2017.

The renumbering is expected to be complete this fall. A new 65-mile section of I-69 between Evansville and the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC Crane) is expected to open by the end of the year. An additional 27-mile section of I-69 from NSWC Crane to Bloomington is scheduled to open in 2014.
