Snow leaves, travel advisories remain

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Snow moved out of Indiana Wednesday morning, but travel advisories remained across the state.

Snow began falling in Indianapolis just after 4 p.m. Tuesday and started to taper off around 4 a.m. Wednesday.

24-Hour News 8 Meteorologist Randy Ollis says snowfall totals have been in the 4-to 7-inch range over the northern half of the state. Northern Indiana locations such as Fort Wayne received around 10 inches of snowfall.

It will be a breezy and cold day Wednesday with highs in the middle 30s.

ROAD CONDITIONS

As of 8:30 a.m., 19 counties were under travel advisories, two counties were under travel watches and one county was under a travel warning. Click here for the latest updates on statewide travel conditions by county.

Many counties have reported a few slide offs Wednesday morning and most of the side roads have some snow coverage.

Police were busy Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning with traffic incidents, though no major issues were reported during the Wednesday morning commute.

Three Indiana State Police cars were struck while investigating accidents early Wednesday morning.

The weather was blamed for three different crashes Tuesday night, including one that killed someone , on I-70 near Cloverdale.  I-70 has reopened since that accident.

Early Tuesday evening, Ind. 37 near State Road 13 in Hamilton County was closed due to an incident involving a semi truck. That road reopened around 9 p.m.

DELAYS AND CLOSINGS

All schools within the Indianapolis Public School District are on a regular scheduled day Wednesday. Nearly 300 area schools and businesses have delayed or closed for Wednesday. Click here for a complete list of closings and delays in the area.

POWER OUTAGES

AS of 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, Duke Energy is reporting 97 outages in the state; 20 in Boone County, 26 in Hamilton County and 30 in Wayne County. Indianapolis Power and Light Company is reporting 320 customers without power.

As of 10:45 p.m. Duke Energy reported more than 3,200 outages throughout Indiana but most of the power was restored within a few hours. A majority of the outages occurred in the southern part of the state.

WORK AND SAFETY

Doctors are warning anyone shoveling snow to be careful because of the health risks associated with the labor.

Shoveling puts strain not just on your back, but your arms and shoulders as well. Doctors say the biggest concern is the strain shoveling places on the human heart.

Doctors say if you have to shovel, go slow and move smaller amounts of snow each time.

WHAT'S NEXT

Milder air will return later this week. A new storm will bring rain by late Sunday and Monday. Highs will climb into the 50s this weekend.
