Crews prepare for morning commute

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Scattered pockets of rain throughout the state will continue throughout the evening and part of the overnight.

The rain should change to snow as we get close to the morning commute Wednesday. There is a possibility of patchy, light coatings of snow on the ground. Be aware of slick areas on the road.

As of  4:30 p.m., it looks like many parts of the metro area could see 1-2 inches of snow by the end of Wednesday.  Northern parts of the viewing area, around Lafayette to Kokomo, could see 2-4 inches of snow, then lighter totals of 1 inch or less, as you get to southern Indiana around Bloomington, Shelbyville, Columbus and Seymour. 

The system moving through will gain some strength as it passes to the east, so expect snow showers to intensify throughout the day. Therefore, the afternoon commute may be more tricky than the morning commute.

PREPARING FOR WINTER WEATHER

The Indy Snow force is preparing for the wintry mix early Wednesday morning.

At 11 p.m. Tuesday night, 90 drivers will report to work to prepare the roads for the morning commute.

The workers will not drop salt while it is still raining, as the rain will wash the salt off the streets. Officials will dispatch drivers to their assigned areas when the rain stops and changes to snow.
