Student storm spotters capture tornado video

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Storms that moved across the state Tuesday afternoon and evening left some damage in their wake in Montgomery County, but no injuries reported. And the storms gave meteorology students at Purdue their first taste of successful storm spotting.

David Siple and Josh Gimbel talked with 24-Hour News 8 about the experience. Watch the video above to see their video.

“I suddenly realized, wow, this is my first tornado I’ve ever seen, it’s my dream. It’s just amazing. It was awesome,” Gimbel said.

Some structures near New Ross were damaged by the storm.

11 p.m. UPDATE: The tornado watch in effect for far eastern Indiana has been canceled early.

10 p.m. UPDATE: After waves of storms moved through Indiana, reports of damage were reported in southern Montgomery and Boone counties. We'll be tracking those reports tonight at 10 and 11 and into Daybreak on Wednesday.

Some counties on the eastern edge of Indiana remain under a tornado watch through 1 a.m.

9:15 p.m. UPDATE: The threat of severe weather is diminishing, Forecast 8 meteorologist Angela Buchman said, though rain continues to move through the eastern half of the state.

Patchy fog is expected overnight, with lows in the 60s. Then it's back to near-record warmth for Wednesday and Thursday, with highs in the 80s.

Structures were damaged in Montgomery County, near the town of New Ross.

Nearly 1,600 customers remain without power, according to Duke Energy, including about 650 in Montgomery County.

8:40 p.m. UPDATE: Several counties in western Indiana have been dropped from the tornado watch, as storms continue to move to the east.

8:30 p.m. UPDATE: Duke Energy reports nearly 1,600 customers without power in its Indiana coverage areas, 666 of them in Montgomery County, where a two-mile swath of damage was reported after a storm with tornadic potential moved through the area.

Emergency officials say there were reports of tornado touchdowns in Boone and Montgomery counties.

There were spotty reports of hail and trees down throughout central Indiana.

Much of the state remains under a tornado watch through 10 p.m. Tuesday.

In Montgomery County, a two-mile swath of damage was reported.

7:40 p.m. UPDATE: Boone County officials say they have reports of a possible tornado touchdown near the town of Jamestown.

The storm in the area has prompted the NWS to issue a series of tornado warnings as the storm has moved across the western half of the state and into central Indiana.

7:30 p.m . UPDATE: A new tornado warning has been issued for parts of Boone and Montgomery counties until 8:15 p.m. The storm spawning the warning has moved from Illinois into the state, and continues moving east.

7:10 p.m . UPDATE: A storm spotter has reported a tornado touchdown in Fountain County, near the town of Yeddo. The storm is moving east into Montgomery County. Both of those counties remain under a tornado warning through 7:30 p.m.

Parts of Hendricks and Marion counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning through 7:45 p.m., as are parts of Greene, Monroe and Owen.

Torrential rains, lightning and wind gusts are the biggest threats in this line of storms, Forecast 8 meteorologist Angela Buchman said.

Hail has been reported in several counties, and flash flooding has been reported on Marion County streets. High wind gusts have also been reported in several countis.

3:45 p.m. UPDATE: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued through 4:30 p.m. for parts of Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Rush and Shelby counties.

Police officials report half-inch hail in Brown County, and there were isolated reports of downed trees in Monroe County.

Duke Energy reports more than 300 customers without power in Monroe County.

3:25 p.m. UPDATE: Tornado warning issued for parts of Bartholomew and Brown counties until 3:45 p.m.

Central Indiana could see severe storms Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday evening. A tornado watch has been issued for part of the state through 10 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning is also in place until 3:45 p.m. for parts of Brown County.

Forecast 8 Meteorologist Ken Brewer says that a storm system that produced thunderstorms Monday will lift back north through the state again Tuesday. As it does so, the chances for severe weather will increase any time after noon.

Like Monday, there is a chance for damaging wind and large hail, but there is also a slightly higher chance of seeing tornadoes as well. The biggest areas to monitor today will be mainly central and southern Indiana.
