Storms leave damage across Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Storms that moved through Indiana as most people slept left damage in their wake and residents without power.

Thousands of people lost electricity because of the early Wednesday morning storms, though as of noon the outages had dropped from thousands to hundreds.

Duke Energy spokeswoman Angeline Protogere said at the height of the outages, about 19,000 Duke customers were without power. The hardest hit areas that Duke serves were Terre Haute, Greencastle and Bloomington . Click here for current outage information.

In Indianapolis, the Castleton area was one of the worst hit areas. Trees in the Royal Pine subdivision fell on homes, and many residents lost power. Most residents had power again as of noon.

Straight-line winds brought down power lines in front of a Costco on 86th Street, also in the Castleton area.

Shelby County emergency management officials said a few barns were destroyed by apparent straight-line winds, and a couple homes were also damaged.

In Greene County, straight-line winds damaged 15-20 homes.

State Road 42 was shut down in Morgan County because of rising water, but has since reopened.

Also in Morgan County , a resident reported to 24-Hour News 8 that a barn was leveled near the Johnson County line.

In Jennings County, dispatchers said crews had to rescue someone from water around 4 a.m. No additional details were available.

Close to 1,900 Bartholomew County   homes and businesses lost power Wednesday morning, 24-Hour News 8's news partner The Republic reports.
