NEWTOWN, Conn. (CNN) - An Iowa woman wanted to show how something as simple as pie can bring smiles and comfort to a place in desperate need of both.

Beth Howard brought her comfort food from Iowa where she hopes to help lift spirits in Newtown, Conn., where an entire community is suffering the pain of loss.

"I lost my own husband three and a half years ago, and mine was a sudden loss. I understand the pain," Howard explains.
