Mother's Day spending could top $18.6 billion

(CNN) - If all you plan on buying your mom for Mother's Day is a card, you better make it a nice one. This year, the average American will spend $152 on their Mother's Day gifts.

That's about $12 more than the average person spent last year.

The National Retail Federation estimates appreciative sons and daughters across the country will spend $18.6 billion. That's based on a consumer spending survey conducted last month.

In spite of economic uncertainty and high gas prices, Mother's Day spending has gone up every year since 2009.
