New Haven firefighter first on scene of own house fire

NEW HAVEN, Ind. (WANE) Firefighters in New Haven battled a house fire early Thursday morning.

Officials on scene said it broke out just after 2:00 a.m. at 1615 Sherbrook Drive.

Authorities confirmed it was the home of a New Haven firefighter, who was actually on-duty at the time and sleeping at the fire station when the call came in for his own address.

Since the station is about a mile away, the firefighter was the first on the scene to his own house fire.

His wife and four children and two dogs were home when the fire started. Officials said the dogs woke up the family, and the wife noticed some smoke.

"That absolutely is a worst nightmare. You're in your bunk in the station, you get toned out, you realize that's your address, your family. Luckily, the family, everybody was able to get out of the fire, out of the home, and there were no injuries," said Tim Bristow of the New Haven-Adams Township Fire Department.

The fire was under control in about 30 minutes. Fire crews clear the scene of the fire around 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

Officials said the fire was contained to the back of the house. There was significant smoke and water damage.

Everyone was able to make it out of the home safe.
