FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo says it will close for the season on Sunday.
One of its final events before the closing will be Saturday's observance of African Penguin Awareness Day, an international event drawing attention to the plight of the threatened birds. It says African penguins are threatened in the wild by oil spills, declining habitat and a diminishing food supply in their native home on the South African coast.
The zoo says guests can enter to win a painting created by one of the zoo's penguins and participate in other activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The zoo says it has attracted more than 500,000 people this year.
