SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - The Shelbyville Police Department alerted residents Friday to a series of vehicle break-ins throughout the city.
The department said they responded to nine of the incidents between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Thursday. They happened at Indiana Grand Casino’s parking garage, the Speedway gas station on Ind. 9, the Texas Coral parking lot, Shelbyville High School’s parking lot and the Shelby County Athletic Club’s parking lot.
Police refer to the type of break-ins as smash-and-grabs. Thieves break a car’s window, grab valuable items and quickly get away. The Shelbyville alert came on the heels of a series of similar crimes in Johnson County this week.
Police officials caution people to not leave valuables in their vehicles. If valuables must be left in vehicles, they should be put in a non-visible place.
