What you need to know when giving CPR or using an AED

If there were an emergency, would YOU know how to perform CPR or use an AED?

Every year there are more than 350,000 instances of cardiac arrest in the U.S. 70% of those occur in homes, meaning you’re most likely to need CPR for a loved one.

Tim Harms, Senior Director of Communications, American Heart Association, explains why the education is so important and what you need to learn… today.

What you need to know when giving CPR or using an AED

– June 1-7 is CPR/AED Awareness Week
– Only 46% of people in cardiac arrest receive bystander CPR
– Approx. 90% of those who experience cardiac arrest die
– Immediate bystander CPR doubles the chance of survival
– Hands-Only CPR (no breaths) is as effective as traditional CPR on teens and adults
– Hands-Only CPR has two steps
1. Call 911
2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest
                – Approx. 100-120 beats per minutes; the beat of the Bee Gees’ song “Stayin’ Alive”
– Most people don’t act because they don’t know what to do
– AEDs are becoming more commonplace in places like airports, shopping centers, schools, office buildings, public parks
– AEDs are easy to use…they give audible instructions on what to do…they will not shock someone who doesn’t need a shock
