Antibiotic-resistant strain of salmonella from chicken making people ill

ATLANTA (WISH) — A strain of salmonella that’s resistant to multiple antibiotics is making people ill in dozens of states including Indiana.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 92 people in 29 states were infected. That includes one person in Indiana.

The CDC said 21 of those people went to the hospital, but no one has died.

People became ill after they came into contact with several different raw chicken products. Those include pet food, chicken pieces, ground pieces and whole chickens.

Some of the states impacted by the outbreak are: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

The bacteria has also been found in live chickens.

Lab tests have not yet been able to figure out a source.
