Sunday marks the beginning of Nurses Week, which wraps up on May 12 each year. May 12 marks Florence Nightingale’s birthday. She is seen as the founder of modern nursing.
According to the American Nurses Association, Nurses Week was first celebrated in 1954 on the 100th anniversary of Nightingale’s mission to Crimea. President Ronald Reagan later signed a proclamation to recognize May 6 as National Nurses Day.
