Honey Smacks recalled for Salmonella risk

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WISH) – Kellogg Co. on Thursday recalled its Honey Smacks cereal because of the potential presence of Salmonella bacteria.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 73 people in 31 states — including three in Indiana — have been infected. Of those, 24 were hospitalized. There have been no deaths.

The company said in a news release, “Kellogg launched an investigation with the third-party manufacturer who produces Honey Smacks immediately after being contacted by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding reported illnesses.”

According to the CDC, Salmonella infections most often cause mild to severe gastroenteritis and severe invasive infections, both which are potentially life-threatening. The Indiana health department said symptoms include diarrhea and stomach cramps and typically appear between 12 and 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment.

The Honey Smacks cereal was distributed across the United States and parts of Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, the Caribbean, Guam, Tahiti and Saipan. Consumers should look for the “BEST if Used By Date” atop the cereal box, and the UPC code at the bottom of the box. “Used By” dates from June 14, 2018, to June 14, 2019 are affected. The UPC codes are 3800039103 for the 15.3-ounce box and 3800014810 for the 23-ounch box. Kellogg asked people to discard or return the cereal with those dates and codes. People can get details on how to get a refund at kelloggs.com or call 1-800-962-1413 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

No other Kellogg products were recalled.
