Mom arrested: Police say gun, drugs and school tardy slip found in car

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A woman from Youngstown was arrested after police say they found several drugs and a gun inside a car she was driving with her son.

According to a police report, officers were flagged down on South Avenue Friday night by 35-year-old Sharron Winphrie.

Police say Winphrie was driving a tan van when she pulled out in front of the officers and frantically tried to get their attention. When officers pulled up alongside her van, the woman told them she and her son had just been shot at.

Police got Winphrie to pull over so they could talk about the situation.

In the meantime, other officers were responding to a call of shots fired in the 900 block of Franklin Avenue. Witnesses there said that a woman they identified as Winphrie, and driving a tan van, had shot at them. Police found a shell casing at the scene.

Meanwhile, Winphrie was telling police that she went to Franklin Avenue to pick up her son when someone there began shooting at them, according to the police report.

A search of Winphrie’s van uncovered a gun, ammunition, heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana, $988 in cash, several pills, including oxycodone, and a bookbag with a tardy slip lying on top, the report stated.

Winphrie was arrested and charged with drug possession and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Police did not state the age of Winphrie’s son or who he was released to.
