2 in critical condition after shooting at east side apartments

A man and a pregnant woman are in critical condition after a shooting in the parking lot of an east side apartment complex, police said.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was called around 2:35 p.m. Thursday to the intersection of John Marshall Drive North and North Mitthoeffer Road, just south of John Marshall High School, on a report of a person shot.

Police found the pregnant woman in the parking lot of a nearby Dollar General store, 3640 Mitthoeffer Road. A good Samaritan had taken her there from the Amber Woods Apartments parking lot to meet an ambulance, police said. Amber Woods Apartments is south of 38th Street off Mitthoeffer Road.

It was not immediately known where the man was found.

Initially, an IMPD spokesman said one victim was awake and breathing while the other was breathing but unresponsive. Police at the scene later said both victims were in critical condition. Police said the victims were taken to area hospitals but did not know the exact ones.

“We heard eight gunshots and then I ran in the house with my son. Right after the gunshots we heard sirens,” said one mother who lives in the complex. “I hope they found out who did it. I hope she makes it. That is just something bad I wouldn’t want to experience… nobody should have to experience.”

Police said they are looking for at least one shooter.

A tan mid-2000s Chevrolet Impala in the parking lot of Amber Woods Apartments has two bullet holes and a couple of bloody handprints on the driver’s side door. Also, the car’s front tire on the driver’s side is flat. The car appeared to be disabled with its lights indicating it is in reverse gear. Detectives from the crime lab were investigating.

Amber Woods Apartments has seen violent crime in the past.

On Jan. 5, 19-year-old Alyjah Muhammad was found shot dead on a sidewalk at Amber Woods Apartments. Police say they have no motive in that homicide investigation. It was 2018’s third homicide. A memorial to Muhammad sits near Thursday’s crime scene.

In January 2015, a passenger fleeing a traffic stop shot an IMPD officer in the foot at the apartment complex. IMPD officers returned fire and 27-year-old Donte Sowell was shot and died of his injuries at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital. Several IMPD patrol cars and an IndyGo bus were damaged in that gunbattle.
