29-year-old arrested in connection to March 2018 homicide

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police said a 29-year-old Indianapolis man in custody is believed to be connected to the death of a 28-year-old nearly a year ago.

Clifton Coats Jr. was arrested Saturday by Lawrence police on gun, drug and resisting arrest charges unrelated to the shooting death of Gregory Hines on March 30. Coats will go to Marion Superior Court, Criminal Division 5, on Wednesday morning to face those charges, according to online records.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office has yet to make a charging decision in connection to Coats’ alleged role in the death of Hines.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was sent just after 2:40 a.m. March 30 to the 3000 block of E 35th St on reports of a person shot. Officers found Hines suffering from an apparent gunshot wound or wounds, police said in a news released issued Tuesday, and emergency medical services personnel pronounced him dead.

The release said detectives determined probable cause for Coats’ arrest in Hines’ death but did not provide details.

Coats was listed as an inmate at the Marion County Jail on Tuesday afternoon.
