Man arrested after Speedway family disturbance leaves 66-year-old dead

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) — A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a Monday morning disturbance that left a 66-year-old man dead and another person injured.

Joseph Bryant, of Indianapolis, was booked into the Marion County Jail facing preliminary charges of involuntary manslaughter and battery resulting in serious bodily injury.

Officers responded to the 5300 block of West 10th Street around 4:45 a.m. on a report of a family disturbance. They arrived to find two injured people, who were transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital for treatment.

One victim, a 66-year-old man, died at the hospital.

Officers with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department located Bryant near the scene and took him to Speedway police for questioning.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

The Marion County coroner will determine if the victim died due to the altercation or from the physical altercation.

According to Speedway Police, a decision from the coroner could come as early as Tuesday.
If the victim’s death is determined a murder, it would mark the first murder in Speedway of 2018. In 2017, officers didn’t report to a single murder investigation. The last murder in Speedway happened in 2016.

“We want the report from the coroner to determine if there was any type of pre-existing health conditions involved with this person passing away,” said Lt. Jim Thiele.
