Man dead in near south side shooting

A man has died in connection with a shooting on the city’s near south side.

Officers from Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called the 1600 block of Union Street — that’s near South Meridian and East Minnesota streets — around 6:50 p.m. Saturday on a report of a person shot.

The victim, which police described as a man around 35 years old, was shot and killed inside the residence, said Capt. Michael Elder with IMPD.

The other person inside the residence, who called police about the incident, has been detained and is being questioned by police, Elder said.

This incident remains under investigation; police have not yet determined it to be a homicide.

The shooting comes hours after a man was shot and killed on the city’s north side, and four people were injured, two critically, in connection with a stabbing on the American Legion Mall outside the Indianapolis Public Library’s central location.
