Upgraded surveillance cameras head to Indy neighborhoods

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Perched atop street corners in various locations in the city are surveillance cameras.

There are about 130 surveillance cameras. Over the years those cameras have captured alleged suspects in the act. Officers can monitor the cameras and punch up intersections and times where crimes occurred.

However, over the years, wear and tear has caught up to the cameras. Some of the cameras are not working properly or simply need to be replaced.

Mayor Joe Hogsett has revealed a plan to upgrade the cameras, moving some of them to neighborhoods that have seen higher levels of crime.

“When people know a camera is in a certain area, criminals, drug dealers and cliques will avoid those areas because they know the cameras are there,” said the Rev. Charles Harrison of the crime-fighting Ten Point Coalition group. “If crime is moving to another area of the neighborhood, you have to move those cameras.”

Officers and city workers are monitoring the cameras inside Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s East District headquarters, 201 Shadeland Ave.
