INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Two brothers from a family that has a history of conflict with IMPD were arrested Thursday morning on preliminary charges of criminal gang activity, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report.
Miketavious Jackson, 19, and Terrell Jackson, 18, were arrested at about 9 a.m. Thursday. Officials said their brother Brandon Johnson, who last year was at the center of a case of alleged police brutality, wasn't there at the time of their arrest.
Terrell Jackson was one of the people shot last month at an east side apartment complex . Police are calling him the ringleader in the gang activity in question.
Thursday's arrests came in connection with years of gang activity - including carjackings, drive-by shootings and drug deals - by a group IMPD referred to as the Pop It Off Boys. Police said the gang operated in an area between 21st and 38th streets along Post Road. The Jackson brothers were among 15 arrested in an early morning raid that involved nearly 200 investigators Thursday. All are facing various felony charges, and police said more arrests are expected.
"This is not something that has come about in the past week month or six months," said Frank Straub, public safety director for the city of Indianapolis.
The arrests were the culmination of an investigation that stretched back years, IMPD said.
The charges also include racketeering, which could extend sentences if any of the accused are convicted. Bail has been set at $100,000 for most of those arrested Thursday, but some were being held without bond.
"We intend to break this gang by prosecuting every member we have identified," said Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry.
