LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) - A 20-year-old Chicago man has been sentenced to 145 days in jail after pleading guilty to fatally punching a 17-year-old boy on a northwestern Indiana beach.
James Malecek apologized for the 2011 punch that killed Kevin Kennelly Jr. of Chicago, saying during Thursday's LaPorte County court hearing that it was a "terrible accident."
Authorities say Kennelly was trying to break up a fight when Malecek punched him during a Fourth of July beach party at Long Beach along Lake Michigan.
Malecek pleaded guilty to a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter and will also face four years of electronic monitoring.
Kevin Kennelly told reporters after the court hearing that Malecek was given a gift of a light sentence for killing his son.
