FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A man accused of gunning down a 17-year-old boy in a backyard was charged with murder Thursday morning.
Police officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department's Gang Unit arrested Deadrian Boykins, 18, of Fort Wayne, on Friday night. Initially, Boykins faced a preliminary charge of Aggravated Battery.
Police believe Boykins gunned down Elijah Freeman , of Fort Wayne, on April 3 in the 900-block of Hugh Street.
Fort Wayne Police Chief York believes Freeman's death was another gang related shooting. "I think this is another situation where we're looking at. I don't think I'm being premature in saying that we're dealing with gangs, drugs, and guns," York said.
Freeman's homicide was the sixth shooting within one week for Fort Wayne and Allen County. There were five shootings over Easter weekend that left two dead, two critically injured and left another in fair condition.
Many people in the Fort Wayne area are worried about the recent string of violence. One pastor is taking a stand against the recent violence by fasting for 40 days.
"This is the most involved the community has ever been in my 13 years as chief. The Urban League, NAACP, calls from the community and the faith-based community as well are looking for answers and they understand the police department can only do so much," York said.
