PERU, Ind. (WISH) - Attorneys for a 19-year-old man who says he set fire to his parents' house because the voices made him do it have filed a mental disease or defect case.
The arson occurred in May. Isaac D. Thomas of Amboy was charged with arson . He told police he set a can of gasoline in the kitchen and lit a fire because he believed his parents were practicing witchcraft on him, 24-Hour News 8 news partner The Kokomo Tribune reports.
Thomas' parents were able to escape unharmed.
State code defines a mental disease or defect as a "severely abnormal mental condition that grossly and demonstrably impairs a person's perception."
A pretrial hearing is set for Sept. 12.
