ELWOOD, Ind. (WISH) - A man targeted for arrest is now dead in Madison County.
Officials say he may have shot himself overnight instead of answering the door of his Elwood home.
Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson says when police went to arrest a wanted man at a home on South K Street, officers heard a gunshot when no one answered the door. That was around 9:30 p.m. Thursday night.
Police then called the SWAT team.
Officers sent in a robotic camera and then police dogs.
Richardson says they think the man took his own life, but they will not know for sure until an autopsy is done. He was found in a crawl space. His identity was not immediately released.
"Anything can happen and anything's possible especially when you hear what you believe to be a gunshot," he said. "It definitely raises the level of threat to officers and anyone who lives near the residence.
The SWAT team closed State Road 13 during the investigation. The road was reopened early Friday morning.
A winter storm warning is in effect for most of Central Indiana.
It's very rare that a single person can reach across national, racial, and spiritual borders to bring such hope and healing.
Dispatchers with Indiana State Police say a vehicle left the roadway Thursday night off of Interstate 69.
