SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Several students testified Tuesday against a former Shelbyville Middle School teacher who was facing 13 felony charges after police say she had sexual relations with children and provided them with alcohol and marijuana .
Bethany Appleton, 29, of Trafalgar, was arrested in August for the incidents that were reported sometime between April 11, 2011 and May 12, 2012. Her charges include two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor as a Class B felony and two counts as a Class C felony; child seduction, a Class D felony; maintaining a common nuisance, a Class D felony; and seven counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a Class A misdemeanor.
24-Hour News 8 news partner The Shelbyville News reports 10 witnesses between the ages of 17 and 19 told their side to a jury Tuesday.
One student said classmates were allowed to drink beer in Appleton's refrigerator. Another told the jury of a sexual relationship with Appleton. He said Appleton was his middle school teacher and helped him with homework.
When he went to high school, he and his friends would go to her house and hang out and over a three-month period, developed a sexual relationship with her.
One out of the 10 witnesses said they were smoking marijuana and knew who provided the substance.
Almost all of the witnesses had different recollections of the alleged incidents when first interviewed by police. The students failed to mention the smoking and drinking but quickly changed their stories when they were told they would get in trouble if they were lying.
Appleton was found not guilty on all charges Wednesday.
