LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) - A fire in the 5000 block of Old Colony Road at the Hunt Club Apartments left a woman and her one year old baby dead Sunday night.
"Oh my goodness, I didn't know that. Oh my goodness. Oh, that's terrible. My heart goes out to them, it really does." said neighbor Michelle Collins.
Authorities tell us a panicked neighbor called 911 around 6:30 p.m. She reported seeing dark windows, heavy smoke and hearing a baby crying from inside.
Moments later, firefighters arrived and found the victims dead. Police have identified the victims as 25-year-old Tracie Shannon and 10-month-old Juliana Shannon.
Firefighters say they didn't find any smoke detectors in the home. They're not certain where or how the fire started, but they say it is suspicious.
"Any fatality is sad with any life that is taken, but when there's a baby, it just compounds that even more." said Dino Batalis, of the Lawrence Fire Department.
