Avondale Meadows carries one of the highest number of walkers hit by vehicles

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Amy Harwell has the unfortunate knowledge of knowing what it feels like to be hit by a car.

In March 2015, Harwell was hit by a driver who tried to leave the scene before being stopped by a witness.

“I am a victim. I understand the crisis and the pain that other families are going through. We all need to do something,” Harwell said.

Near East 38th Street and Keystone Avenue along the Avondale Meadows corridor, residents are taking a proactive steps to protect walkers from drivers. According to Health by Design, that stretch has one of the highest number of walkers hit by vehicles in Indianapolis.

On June 9, the group will team up with AARP, Marion County Public Health Department and Walkways Moving Indy Forward to host a walk safe workshop. Members of the group and residents will perform a walk audit. They will examine the corridor, and talk about solutions and what drivers and walkers should be aware of when in that area.

The meeting is targeting people who live and work in there.

Avondale Meadows YMCA will host the walk safe workshop. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 9. To register, call 317-221-2094.
