Giraffe escapes from exhibit at Fort Wayne zoo

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A giraffe escaped its enclosure at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo midday Monday.

Zoo spokesman Bonnie Kemp told 24-Hour News 8’s sister station NewsChannel 15 that a female reticulated giraffe had gotten out of its exhibit in the African Journey. It’s not clear how the giraffe escaped from the enclosure.

Kemp said the giraffe was still on the zoo’s property. Zookeepers were working to keep the animal calm and move it back to its exhibit, Kemp said.

It’s not clear if the giraffe is in a public area of the zoo.

The zoo opened for the season on Saturday. It opened for the day at 9 a.m.
