President Trump orders federal flood assistance for Indiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — President Donald Trump has ordered federal assistance for Indiana because of late-winter flooding.

Trump made the disaster declaration on Friday. It makes federal funding available to people in counties affected by severe storms and flooding from Feb. 14 to March 4.

Eligible counties are Carroll, Clark, Elkhart, Floyd, Harrison, Jefferson, Lake, Marshall and St. Joseph.

Assistance could include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property and other programs.

Federal funding is also available to state, local and tribal governments and some nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work or repair or replacement in an extended area covering 27 counties.

There’s also assistance available to the state for hazard remediation.

Additional designations may be made later.
