FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — An 83-year-old Fort Wayne man who's legally blind and uses an oxygen tank hopes practice will pay off as he tries to learn to play the guitar.
Al Wheeler tells The Journal Gazette he wants to learn to play "Amazing Grace," ''Sweet Caroline" and "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife."
He says "Amazing Grace" and Marty Robbins' "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife" are his favorite songs. "Sweet Caroline" is for Caroline, his wife of 60 years.
Director Kevin Christenson says Wheeler is the oldest of the nearly 400 students at the Sweetwater Academy of Music in Fort Wayne. Most students learn an instrument between the ages of 11 and 18.
That isn't stopping Wheeler. He's taking a break from lessons but hasn't given up on practice.
