EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Police in Evansville have arrested a man after they say a 9-year-old girl was shot in the hand while he let her handled a rifle.
Police say the 48-year-old man had the girl and two other children watch his dog while he went to a liquor store on Friday. The Evansville Courier & Press reports that when he returned, he retrieved some guns from his home and let the children hold them.
He told officers he didn't realize the rifle still had a round in the chamber. Police say the girl faced partial amputation of one or more fingers from her wounds.
The man was jailed over the weekend on a preliminary charge of dangerous control of a firearm.
