INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - For the first time Tuesday, a representative of the Obama Administration apologized for the rollout of the Affordable Care Act. It took place in a Congressional hearing regarding the Obamacare website. In that hearing, an Indiana Congressman asked some tough questions.
The apology also came at the same time that millions of Americans learned that they can't keep their health insurance plans, even though the President said they could. Congressman Todd Young (R-9th District) pointed out that the two problems are connected.
Marilyn Tavenner, the chief of Medicaid and Medicare, appeared before the Ways and Means committee to explain problems with the Obamacare website. But Rep. Young wanted to ask about a 2009 statement by the President, who said at the time, "If you like your doctor or your health care plan, you can keep it."
Young produced a cancellation letter sent to him by an unnamed constituent, a constituent who has been unable to sign up for another insurance policy through the website.
"Due to health care reform, effective 1/1/14, the policy in the name of said citizen has been or will be terminated as of January 1, 2014," Young read from the letter. He then asked, "When can she sign up for her health care, Ms. Tavenner?"
"Does it go on to talk about other policies or it just says she's cancelled and that's it?" asked Tavenner
"She needs to sign up through the website," Young responded.
"She can sign up through that website or she can go back to that individual issuer," said Tavenner.
Nationwide, millions of people have received cancellation letters — a fact that caused another Indiana Congressman, Luke Messer (R-6th District,) to call for a delay in the implementation of Obamacare in a speech on the House floor.
"More people have received cancellation letters than have enrolled so far," said Messer, "through all of the Affordable Care Act exchanges."
Tavenner said enrollment numbers won't be available until mid-November.
Todd Young said that his unnamed constituent is so concerned about signing up for health insurance that she and her husband set their alarm clocks to go off in the middle of the night so they can use the website when there is less traffic.
She has still been unable to complete the application process.
