MUNSTER, Ind. (AP) — Democratic state Rep. Shelli VanDenburgh of Crown Point wants Republican Gov. Mike Pence to re-evaluate the makeup of the State Board of Education after a newspaper reported a member serving as an independent has a history of voting in Republican primaries and donating to GOP candidates.
The Times of Munster reports campaign finance records show Marian University President Daniel Elsener has donated $10,575 to Republican candidates and business groups supporting Republicans since 2001. He also has voted in GOP primary elections nine out of the last 10 elections.
State law allows only six of the 10 Board of Education members from the same political party. The governor's office has said Elsener is an independent.
A message seeking comment was left with the governor's office Monday.
