CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana Supreme Court has appointed a retired justices to mediate a dispute between Superior Court judges and magistrates in Lake County over the appointment of a new juvenile court judge.
The Times of Munster reports the high court on Monday appointed retired Justice Frank Sullivan Jr. to the case.
The high court last month granted a request by three juvenile court magistrates that it block the northwest Indiana county's 15 Superior Court judges from filling the vacancy with one of their own instead of using an existing merit selection process. Indiana law prohibits the transfer of a judge from one court to another without going through merit selection.
The vacancy was created by the appointment of Judge Mary Beth Bonaventura to direct the Indiana Department of Child Services.
