FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A robbery at a CVS pharmacy in Fort Wayne quickly escalated into a three-hour standoff at a nearby apartment complex, according to officials.
Police responded to the report of an armed robbery at the CVS pharmacy, located at 2802 East State Boulevard, at around 10:20 a.m. Saturday.
According to police, a woman walked into the store and approached the pharmacy counter. The suspect then gave the pharmacist a note demanding a prescription narcotic. She also indicated that she had a gun; however, no weapon was visible.
Police said the woman then fled the store on foot with the drugs.
No injuries were reported during the robbery, according to officials.
Witnesses told police that the woman ran to Beacon Heights Apartments, located at 2210 Beacon Street, following the robbery. Several Fort Wayne Police Department and Allen County Sheriff's Department squad cars were then seen at the apartment complex shortly after the robbery Saturday morning.
Police said multiple officers were searching for the woman inside of that apartment complex. Officers determined she was on the second floor.
Police tried to speak with the suspect via telephone but she refused to come out of the apartment, according to police.
Crime scene tape was put up around the entire apartment complex around 11:30 a.m. Police also blocked off Beacon Street to all traffic.
The Emergency Services Team (EST) and Crisis Response Team (CRT) were called to assist in the investigation after the woman refused to come out of the apartment.
After several failed attempts of trying to communicate with the woman, EST members broke one of the windows.
The suspect then began communicating with officers outside of the apartment.
Police said she then exited the apartment peacefully at around 1:40 p.m. She was arrested immediately.
According to Fort Wayne Police Department spokesperson Jason Anthony, no injuries were reported at the apartment complex during the standoff.
Anthony said several apartments were evacuated during the standoff.
The woman was identified as Tondra D. Lampkin. Police said Lampkin has been arrested on a preliminary charge of robbery. Officials said other charges against Lampkin are pending.
The incident remains under investigation.
