Center Grove student dies in car, Johnson County Animal Control SUV crash

Staff Reports -

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) -- A 17-year-old Center Grove High School student died in a crash Friday morning, authorities said.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the girl as Sarah Kish, a junior at Center Grove. She was taken to Indiana University Methodist Hospital in critical condition for surgery after the crash, authorities at the scene said.

Greenwood Police Department told 24-Hour News 8 at the crash scene that a Johnson County Animal Control sport-utility vehicle and car collided.

According to our partners at the Daily Journal, the crash happened about 6:30 a.m. on State Road 135 in Greenwood between Curry Road and County Road 800 North.

Michael Delp, director of Animal Control, said by phone, "Our hearts are broken, and our prayers go out to the family of Sara."

An Animal Control employee was driving the SUV to work, Delp said, but he declined to identify him until police issue their report on the crash. The employee received minor injuries in the crash, Delp said.

"He's just distraught, just distraught," Delp said about the employee.

There were no animals in the vehicle at the time of the crash, Delp said. The vehicle was severely damaged, as was Sara's car, the Animal Control director said.

Greenwood Police Department Assistant Chief Matt Fillenwarth told the Daily Journal that Kish's vehicle was struck by the SUV in the driver's side door. Investigators on Friday afternoon were still determining how the crash just south of Curry Road happened, the assistant police chief said.

After hours of surgery, doctors were unable to save Kish and she died at the hospital, Fillenwarth said.

Police have not identified the driver of the SUV, said the assistant police chief, who did not know if he was on a run when the accident happened.

As is standard in serious or fatal accident investigations, the SUV driver was taken to the hospital for a blood draw. Police have no reason to suspect anything criminal happened, Fillenwarth said.
