Distracted driver causes 4-vehicle crash on Meridian Street

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) -- Three people were hurt when a distracted driver caused a four-vehicle crash on Meridian Street Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to Meridian Street and 62nd Street just after 8 a.m.

A 33-year-old man in a Jeep Wrangler said he was driving south on Meridian Street when he got distracted by his phone and rear-ended a Honda Pilot, according to an Indianapolis Fire Department media release.

The Pilot was pushed into a northbound box truck which then hit a Volkswagen Passat heading north. Both the truck and Passat crashed into trees after leaving the road and ending up in a yard.

No one was seriously hurt, IFD said.

The Wrangler driver was taken to St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital with a slight injury. A 72-year-old female passenger in the Pilot had to be pulled out by firefighters. She and the driver, her 50-year-old daughter, were transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital with slight injuries.

Drivers in the truck and Passat were not injured.
